		  devices based on the power as sovereign to search at the border or upon entry
		  to the United States.</official-title>

		<section id="H0D6131F1404140E98C64759E0072ECEA" section-type="section-one"><enum>1.</enum><header>Short title</header><text display-inline="no-display-inline">This Act may be cited as the
			 <quote><short-title>Electronic Device Privacy Act of
			 2008</short-title></quote>.</text>
		</section><section id="HE3F8165FB0C64990AC5D00B1B5C6D74B"><enum>2.</enum><header>Border searches
			 of laptops</header>
			<subsection id="H0BD54C59F8294FFB8D0174A1685D552D"><enum>(a)</enum><header>Generally
			 prohibited</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">No person acting
			 under the authority of the United States shall have any authority, derived from
			 the power of a sovereign to search at borders or upon entry to the territory of
			 that sovereign, to require that any person entering the United States submit to
			 a search of the electronic contents of that person’s laptop computer or similar
			 device.</text>
			</subsection><subsection id="H30EA58B82B4B40D6A8410052024D4000"><enum>(b)</enum><header>This section
			 does not prohibit searches based on other lawful
			 authority</header><text>Subsection (a) shall not be construed to in any way
			 limit or affect any search based on lawful authority other than the power of a
			 sovereign to search at borders or upon entry to the territory of that
			 sovereign.</text>
			</subsection><subsection id="H0BC9A16F0201476C92E0E989B0420423"><enum>(c)</enum><header>Definition</header><text display-inline="yes-display-inline">As used in this Act, the term <quote>laptop
			 computer or other similar device</quote> means a computer of the sort generally
			 recognized as being a laptop computer, and includes any other electronic device
			 normally used for electronic mail or messaging, or storing electronic
			 data.</text>
